Philosophy
The project work of Harwood Architects is in the fields of architecture, urban design, interior design, furniture and landscape architecture. It is driven by values and design processes embedded in progressive global philosophies, while also being informed by a respect and understanding of traditional built forms and construction methods. Where we are working adjacent to or within historically and socially significant sites we are interested in how the new work can respond appropriately to the old. This approach applies from the micro to macro level, from furniture design to landscape and urban planning.
We design spaces that support a range of programs and possibilities that can respond to current needs and desires and also accommodate the unforseen . These are flexible, inviting places with one thing in common, humane qualities. Harwood is made up of diverse individuals united by their passion for good ideas. Each project commences with the collective search for the big issues and then the creation of a guiding vision.
We are focused on innovative solutions to the contemporary built environment. We are committed to achieving multi-dimensional design outcomes that are not only environmentally sustainable but, culturally, socially, and economically sustainable, promoting the engagement of its citizens with their city.
Designers have a responsibility to consider the social and environmental impact of what they make. For large cities and small buildings alike, we take environmental sustainability as the foundation of each project. The office follows a creative regime of sustainability benchmarking. Experts consult with our staff, and oversee the environmental design of all projects.
